Days 1–2 · Galle · two nights

The fort, for two nights

Met at the airport and driven south down the expressway to Galle, and into the fort itself rather than past it. Two nights inside the walls means the ramparts at sunset and the streets after the day visitors have gone. A cooking morning at Angara Home if you want one: the market first, then the kitchen.

Days 3–4 · Ella · two nights

Up into the hills

Inland and up, with Buduruwagala on the way - seven colossal figures cut into a rock face in the seventh century, in a clearing most people drive past. Ravana Falls after it, then Ella. The second day is Little Adam’s Peak and Nine Arches by tuk tuk.

Day 5 · Nuwara Eliya

The line, taken uphill

The train from Ella to Nanu Oya - the same famous stretch, run in the direction almost nobody takes it, which means the tea slopes open ahead of you instead of falling away behind. Four hours with the doors open. High tea at the Grand in Nuwara Eliya if the afternoon allows.

Days 6–7 · Kandy · two nights

Tea, then the relic

The old red post office and the town, then down through Ramboda Falls and the Bluefield factory to Kandy. The next day is the Tooth Relic during the Thevava, a walk round the lake, and the Kandyan dancers in the evening.

Days 8–11 · Dambulla · four nights

Four nights in the Cultural Triangle

Nalanda Gedige on the way north - a small stone temple with Hindu and Buddhist carving on the same walls. Then four nights at Dambulla, which is enough to do the Triangle properly rather than at a run. A village morning on the Dambulu Oya with a catamaran and a paddy walk. Polonnaruwa by bicycle. Sigiriya and Minneriya in one day, the rock in the morning and the herds in the afternoon. And the painted caves at Dambulla itself before you leave.

Days 12–13 · Wilpattu · two nights

A full day at Wilpattu

West to Wilpattu, the island’s largest and oldest park - and the next day is spent inside it, not for an afternoon but from the gates opening to the light going, with a picnic in the middle. Leopard, sloth bear, and the villus that give the place its name: natural lakes that fill and empty with the rains.

Days 14–17 · Nilaveli · four nights

The east coast, at last

Across to Nilaveli for four nights. Pigeon Island is twenty minutes offshore and has the best coral left in Sri Lankan water - reef sharks in the shallows if you are lucky. Spinner dolphins at first light on another morning, in their hundreds. Beyond that, the beach, which on this coast is wide, white and mostly empty.

Day 18 · Negombo

The long drive back

Across the country to Negombo for the last night. It is six hours and there is no shorter way - we tell you rather than hide it, and we leave early so the afternoon is not lost as well.
