Beach & Island Escapes

Ninety kilometres of coast, and a week to do it in.

Sri Lanka's coastline runs nearly 1,600 kilometres around the island, and the different stretches are genuinely different — not just different beaches but different seas, different towns, different reason to be there. The south coast is for food and fort and surf. The east is for silence and flat water. The west is for watching fishermen. A week here is enough to understand the difference.

Which coast, which month

The southwest (Hikkaduwa, Unawatuna, Mirissa) is dry November through April. The east coast (Arugam Bay, Pasikudah, Trincomalee) is dry May through September — the months the southwest is being rained on. This is not a complication; it means there is always a coast available, and the one in season is the one to go to.

What we add to a beach week

A half-day on a traditional wooden fishing boat before the catch comes in. A morning snorkelling Pigeon Island. Dinner cooked by a family in Mirissa with whatever came in that morning. A sunset at Tangalle where the beach is empty for a kilometre in each direction. These are the things that separate a beach week from a resort week.

How the bases work

We move once. Two properties, three to four nights each — enough to settle in before the next. The properties are chosen for quietness: small guesthouses with direct beach access, or boutique hotels with a pool where you are not fighting for a sunlounger. We do not put guests in large resort hotels unless that is specifically what they ask for.
