Cultural & Heritage Tours

Four UNESCO sites, and the temple hours to see them properly.

Sri Lanka has eight UNESCO World Heritage sites and a civilisation that built in stone for two thousand years before the Portuguese arrived. A heritage journey here is not a checklist of temple photographs — it is two weeks moving through a culture that is still in use, in towns where the same families have farmed and fished and worshipped for generations.

The Cultural Triangle

Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa, Anuradhapura, Dambulla — these four sites sit within a triangle in the dry zone north of Kandy, and each one is different enough to warrant its own day. We time Sigiriya before seven, when the light is low and the coaches have not arrived. Polonnaruwa is better on bicycle. Anuradhapura requires a guide who knows the sacred precincts and the etiquette inside them.

Kandy and the south

The Temple of the Tooth at its midday puja — the ritual moment, not the tourist hour. The Kandyan dance performed for ten people rather than a theatre. Galle Fort, which the Dutch built and the Sri Lankans have lived in continuously since — not a museum, a neighbourhood. We stay inside the fort, not on its edges.

What a local specialist adds

Knowing the monks. Getting into the inner sanctum of a working temple that closes to visitors by nine. Visiting a craftsman who still makes the lacquerwork the courts used to commission. These are not on any printed list — they come from two decades of the same relationships, kept up year after year.
