Leopards at Yala, elephants at Udawalawe, and the parks between.

Sri Lanka has one of the highest leopard densities in the world, and Yala's Block I is where they are most reliably seen — but that is not the whole story. Udawalawe has four hundred resident elephants. Wilpattu is ancient forest with almost no one in it. A wildlife journey here is three days at Yala plus two more places, not just three days at Yala.

The animals

Leopard is the headline. Sloth bear appears in the early mornings at Wilpattu. The elephant gathering at Minneriya — three hundred animals in one field — runs from August through October and is one of the largest on earth. Whale watching off Mirissa runs December through April. A serious wildlife trip visits two parks minimum.

How we run the safaris

We use jeeps and trackers who know specific animals — who can say, before we set off, which leopard was sighted and where. Morning drives start before the gate opens so you are the first vehicle on the track. Afternoon drives are timed around the hour the big cats move. We do not do combined safari-and-beach-resort days.

The route

Most wildlife journeys run Udawalawe — Tissamaharama (for Yala) — coast or Kandy, depending on time. Wilpattu adds two nights in the dry zone northwest and suits guests who want the early parks without the crowd. We design the nights so no drive is wasted — each morning starts at the park gate rather than an hour away from it.
